about

nuabs was born one weekend when the few of us were hanging out.

Somewhere along the line, we started talking about the issues our world faces: climate change, global warming, war, conflicts, threats to the natural world, loss of indigenous tribes, growing shortage of food, uncontrolled inflation and a voracious material culture.

Maybe these problems will always be there. Still we want help make things a little better.

We thought the best way would be to set up a brand based on our philosophy. One that tries to promote opportunities for people of the third world, instead of exploiting them. One that fosters understanding and bridges the different worlds.

What better way to build common ground then by introducing a common footwear. After all, it has been said: “You can only understand someone after walking a mile in his shoes.” So we chose the type of sandals worn by farmers, which we felt would be cool for urbanites.

Through nuabs, we hope to express our passion for living and humanity. Perhaps inspire and connect to other like-minded people as well.

In fact, the name “nuabs” says a lot about how we view ourselves and what we hope to achieve.

nuabs stands for “new Asian beings” – self-determining individuals who shape our own destiny through conscious choices and actions. We are people who choose to be responsible and open-minded members of the global community.

Today, about 180,000 people around the world will leave the countryside and move to a city. Humans are becoming urban creatures at an accelerating speed. The United Nations calculates that London's population took 130 years to grow from 1m to 8m. Bangkok, Thailand took 45 years. Dhaka, Bangladesh 37. And Seoul, South Korea just 25. In much of Asia, rice is the essence of survival. Poor people in both cities and rural areas spend 1/2 to 3/4 of their incomes on rice - and only rice. Millions of resource-poor farmers eke a living on small parcels of land in remote, mountainous or arid regions. Yet it is estimated they produce as much as 20% of the world's food - largely without the benefit of modern agriculture. Majority of the world's resource-poor farmers are women. They produce more than 1/2 of the food grown around the world. In some regions, as much as 80%. If a girl gets at least 6 years of education, her childbirth survival rate in adulthood will dramatically and consistently improve. The world's poor actually own trillions of dollars' worth of assets. But their houses, plots of land and businesses lacked formal title - and so can't be used to do all the things that people in wealthy countries do to turn a little money into a lot of money. Establishing property rights is a necessary first step.
